150 years ago, dentists began using silver-mercury compounds as tooth fillings and not much changed until fairly recently. That’s why so many adults still have the old-style fillings.
Not only are silver-mercury fillings unattractive, but as they age, they contract and expand until the tooth eventually breaks or the filling falls out leaving the cavity exposed.
Potentially harmful fillings can be replaced with new 5th generation bonding resins. These new resins do not expand to generate internal tooth splitting like the old silver-mercury fillings. Instead, they bond to the tooth thus strengthening the tooth. Plus they are tooth-colored so they look great. But most importantly, they are safe.
Teeth with large silver-mercury fillings can be restored using all porcelain Bonded Onlays.
